The Care Protocol

THE CARE PROTOCOL

Maintaining FORTYSEVEN jewellery.

You have purchased solid 925 Sterling Silver. Unlike cheap, rhodium-plated fast fashion that hides beneath a chemical coating, raw silver is a dynamic, reactive element. It interacts with its environment, and over time, it will develop a unique patina based on how you live, work, and wear it.

We do not view this as a defect. We view it as character.

However, to maintain the structural integrity and desired finish of your FORTYSEVEN pieces, follow this maintenance protocol.

1. Oxidation is Proof of Purity

Pure silver reacts to sulfur and moisture in the air, causing the metal to darken over time. This process is called oxidation, and it is the absolute proof that your jewelry is genuine Sterling Silver.

  • The Patina: Many men prefer the darkened, rugged look of oxidized silver as it settles into the engraved details and inner links of a chain.
  • The Prevention: The best way to prevent rapid oxidation is simply to wear it. The natural oils in your skin act as a barrier and gently polish the metal as it moves against you.

2. Operational Hazards (What to Avoid)

Element 47 is tough, but it is not invincible against harsh modern chemicals. To prevent severe discoloration or structural damage:

  • Chlorine & Bleach: Never wear your silver in swimming pools or hot tubs. Chlorine aggressively attacks silver and will turn it black almost instantly.
  • Grooming Products: Apply your cologne, deodorant, and hair products before putting on your jewelry. The chemicals in these aerosols can accelerate tarnishing.
  • Heavy Lifting: While our pieces are engineered for substance, silver is a naturally malleable metal. Remove your rings before heavy weightlifting to prevent scratching or bending the band against knurled steel bars.

3. The Cleaning Protocol

If you prefer the original, high-contrast gleam of your silver, restoring it is a straightforward process.

  • Routine Maintenance (Dry Polish): Use a specialized microfiber silver polishing cloth. Firmly buff the metal in long, straight strokes (avoiding tight circles) to remove light oxidation and restore the shine.
  • The Deep Clean (Wet Wash): If dirt or sweat has built up in the links of a chain, mix warm water with a few drops of mild, fragrance-free dish soap. Soak the piece for five minutes, gently scrub with a soft-bristle toothbrush, rinse in clean water, and dry it completely with a soft cloth. Never leave silver wet.

4. Storage

When you are not wearing your FORTYSEVEN jewelry, do not leave it sitting out in a humid environment like a bathroom. Store it in the original pouch or box provided to minimize its exposure to the air.
